Configuring an Virtual Machine in Hyper-V with a public IP address using a VLAN.

hi,

objective:
to configure a virtual machine in hyper-v public ip address using vlan.

current settings:
-using a lenovo t-500 laptop connected directly a cisco catalyst 3550 dmz switch via port fa0/11 these simple settings:

!
interface fastethernet0/11
duplex full
speed 100
switchport access vlan 3
!

-os on host windows server 2008 r2 enterprise(full) hyper-v role. vm os same.
-created "external virtual network" using virtual network manager in hyper-v manager , called "vlan 3" reference. connected physical nic intel(r) 82567lf gigabit network connection , has "allow management operating system share network adapter" checked. in sccvm, "networking" tab "vlan 3" has "physical network adapter" selected under "network bindings" , "host access" local area connection set trunked.
-vm netwok adapter settings under "settings" has network pointing "vlan 3" nothing else changed.

we know external network creates virtual switch "microsoft virtual network switch protocol" only and virtual nic settings of physical adapter besides "microsoft virtual network switch protocol."

steps:

-assigned virtual nic in host public ip(for example, 31.99.178.94/24). pinging ip replies subnetted class c workstation. gateway set to router ip(for example, 31.99.178.90). internet accessible.
-assigned vm bus network adapter in virtual machine public ip(for example, 31.99.178.95/24). pinging ip timesout subnetted class c workstation. gateway set to router ip(for example, 31.99.178.90) internet accessible.
-vm able ping vm's public ip. host unable ping vm's public ip.

any ideas on why unable ping vm's ip , should worried?

thanks!

well figured out bit of help. turns out windows server 2008 r2 has 3 types of firewalls: "domain profile", "private profile", , "public profile active." not sure 1 causing pings fail disabling 3(to test) on vm and success!

final beta settings:

hyper-v
- external virtaul network - no "allow management operating systemto share newtork adapter" / "enable virtual lan identification management operating system"

scvmm
- under "networking" tab host properties, network bindings set "physical network adapter."  no "host access"

nic settings:

-host's physical nic in "network connections" act virtual switch, showing "microsoft virtual network switch protocol" enabled , else disabled.
-vm's virtual nic in "network connections" configured public ip , default gateway set router originally.

results:
-only 1 public ip used , able ping vm vm able access internet :).

cheers!
