How do RRAS, DNS, and DHCP work together?

hi all, having trouble host name resolution in vpn setup vpn, , need help. don't seem understand how rras, dns, , dhcp work in vpn environment. have few client machines @ home need connect work network. (our network servers in co-location facility, , accessed remotely via vpn.) each of home clients can connect vpn, having issues name resolutions cross 'vpn boundary': none of network servers can correctly resolve vpn client ip addresses, , vpn clients can resolve couple of network server ip addresses.

my configuration: server1 dc, , win2k3 sp2 x32 box running dns , dhcp. server2 rras + hyperv server, , win2k8 r2 x64 box. server 2's rras configuration includes ipv4 routing both lan , demand-dial, ipv4 remote access server enabled, ipv4 forwarding , broadcast name resolution enabled, dhcp relay agent enabled , pointing dc. client1 windows xp sp3 workstation, , client2 win2k3 x64 server. servers 1 , 2 run on local network 192.168.0.0; clients 1 , 2 run on same remote network 192.168.1.0. see strangeness in dc's dhcp/dns settings/configuration/status. dhcp, says addresses range 192.168.0.18 - .27 leased rras server (192.168.0.24 vpn ip client1). dns had both forward , reverse entries of 192.168.0.201 client1's host name, deleted.

how dns entries made dhcp vpn clients? on dc, see no new records created vpn clients in forward lookups section when sign in, , ptr records in reverse lookups section either missing or wrong. how resolve this? 1 potential issue i've noticed client's subnet masks. example, client1's local address 192.168.1.4/255.255.255.0; vpn address 192.168.0.24/255.255.255.255. possible issue gateway address: ipconfig/all on clients shows client's vpn ip default gateway; correct? please advise.

if you're referring single name resolution, believe are, , users machines @ home not have a search suffix matches dns domain name of system connecting to, in addition james suggested, may suggest use wins? wins give abiilty use netbios name.

please read more on it:

otherwise, must instruct users use fqdn of each machine connect to.
