Best way to add Windows Server 2208 R2 to an Existing 2003 Domain ?
hey planning
add new server 2008r2 in small organization consisting of 20 30
workstations. need make best decision implement new infrastructure
based on details:
current infrastructure:
clients:
- 20 25 windows xp , 3 windows 7 workstations.
- running applications such :
- accpac “accounting application” ( stores
data on centralized server database using “pervasive sql 2000” )
-xdms “ custom business application
technical customer service ( stores data in sql 2005 on centralized
server )
-goldmine “long leader in field of contact management , sales force
automation” has shortcut application on workstations desktop that
connects server. - clients
configured static ipv4 addresses (no dhcp) dns pointing the
isp’s dns server. - microsoft
outlook
server:
- windows server 2003 small business server.
- this server domain controller ( .local
) (the server , dc in organization) - dns server installed. (which old administrator didn’t use a
local dns clients connect to. “don’t know why”). - pervasive sql 2000 (a database management software
used accpac running on clients.) - goldmine application (this application runs on
server has desktop shortcuts on clients workstations.) - sql 2005 contains data stored “xdms”
application running on clients.
new infrastructure with server2008 r2
ideas , questions :
- implement dhcp lease addresses , make reservation
managers , multifunction printers.
- implement wsus deploy authorized updates to
workstations (can wsus used update norton anti virus?) - implement dns, clients pointing to.
- implement network load balancing other
server picks if 1 fails. - implement hyper-v on server 2008r2 with
server 2003 installed run pervasive2000 hosts database management for
accpac, since pervasive sql 2000 has compatible issues windows server
2008r2 , organisation isn’t ready yet update accpac/pervasive sql 2000.
(is there other way can make compatible server 2008r2? app-v?
med-v ?) - should add server 2008 r2 new domain
controller in existing domain? if so, apart active directory data /
policies being automatically replicated, how data applications
, applications setting replicated? should reconfigure each application
manually on new server? - i thinking deploying server 2008r2
main server , server 2003 backup replica. ( suggestions or
guidance ?? ) - or should use server 2008r2 domain
controller contains dns , dhcp, wsus, etc , put applications and
databases on server 2003 , deploy member server? (if how will
network fault tolerant in case server fails ? can implement?)
note: run incremental backup on 2 external drives
every day , keep each 3 days before overwrite newer
backup. 1 backup stays @ office, other leaves gm every
night.
please add any
suggestions, questions, or guidance. appreciated as
start of “real life / hands-on” experience in organisation
doesn’t have specialist can guide me making right
decision. organisations network pretty simple consisting of a
couple business applications. main objective keep simple, add what
think can improve current , future functionality, , make sure the
network fault tolerant avoid down time , data loss.
thank
chris
