hi rigel networks,
firstly, can disable dhcp role in windows server 2008 r2. however, if windows server 2012 down, clients cannot renew ip lease duration , obtain ip address.
therefore, recommended leave dhcp role in windows server 2008 r2 , deploy high availability. windows server 2012 brings new feature: dhcp failover. requires both dhcp servers windows server 2012. consider server windows server 2008 r2, have choose 1 of following:
l dhcp in windows failover cluster. option places dhcp server in cluster additional server configured dhcp service assumes load if primary dhcp server fails. clustering deployment option uses single shared storage. makes storage single point of failure, , requires additional investment in redundancy storage. in addition, clustering involves relatively complex setup , maintenance.
l split scope dhcp. split scope dhcp uses 2 independent dhcp servers share responsibility scope. typically 70% of addresses in scope assigned primary server , remaining 30% assigned backup server. if clients cannot reach primary server can ip configuration secondary server. split scope deployment not provide ip address continuity , unusable in scenarios scope running @ high utilization of address space, common internet protocol version 4 (ipv4).
