Windows 2008 NetSH Global Command - Invalid Registry

hi,

i have created sccm 2007 desired configuration management policy check registry setting on 10,000 windows servers.

sccm 2007 dcm has ability check setting on windows os validate setting in compliance internal standards.

i have use sccm 2007 dcm check registry setting:

machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\tcpip\parameters\enablepmtudiscovery = 1 (dword)

i wanted ensure registry setting set 1.  however, analyzing data returned sccm, learned 1700 (of 2000 windows 2008 non r2) servers showing setting set other 1.

after investigating further, found enablepmtudiscovery set 0x000000ff (255).  setting odd... after searching internet, found these 2 articles indicate if try use netsh global commands set tcp parameters, various settings within hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\tcpip\parameters\ set invalid ff.

my question is:  impact of having these registry settings misconfigured due netsh bug?  servers die?

here more details on netsh bug:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967224

(i posted windows 2008 service packs forum because there no other active forums windows 2008 non r2)

after checking http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967224, seeing each registry key referenced different sources , technical articles. example, 1 of topics covered there key change tcp chimney offload. remember working support cases key caused inconsistent behavior network adapter , way fix disable feature.

having said that, don't think servers going crash right away if don't have 967224 applied, however, can keep eye on problematic server in environment , when identify pattern, check if keys documented in http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2009/08/31/running-netsh-on-windows-2008-vista-causes-invalid-registry-entries-to-be-created.aspx same modified on problematic server.

hth,

jose
