Fix and Migrate or Migrate then fix?

we have rds role installed on windows 2008 r2 domain controller running in "remote desktop administration" licensing mode several per device volume licenses. "remote desktop session host" role service not installed.

our original project migrate role server (pref not domain controller). plan below to be followed:

1. install rds role , tools on <replacement server> (non-dc)
2. activate rds role in <replacement server>, microsoft clearing house authorise addition/activation of server. agreement numbers may required. confirm <replacement server> has been added correct security groups (if not add).
3. using rds migration wizard migrate cal’s new server
4. use review configuration tool on <replacement server>, manually specify server name (see step 6 if options greyed out)
5. using rds host configuration mmc select <replacement server> rds license server
6. –option- enable gpo option point correct rds server (this may required – looking it)
7. allow active directory replication , begin testing
8. after confirmation of functioning licensing remove licenses euabzdc03, remove rds roles/tools

morning user contacted our help desk with error:

"your terminal services temporary client license expire in 6 days, please contact system administrator get a permanent license."

upon checking "rd licensing manager" found 2 sets of temporary "per device" cal's being issued though corresponding vl cals exist (and have remaining licenses).

guess question is, process of moving rds role replacement, non-dc server fix issue user is experiencing or should address issue first , carry out migration?

hi,

either way fine since there not time involved.  suggest migrating first since there chance issue resolved.  after migrating please have user log on , verify pc issued per device rds cal.

if issue still exists after migrating remove license pc's registry and log on/log off to rdsh twice pc, verify in rd licensing per device rds cal issued.

thanks.
