Firewall settings for SCVMM?
understand best way manage hyper-v use scvmm. documentation stated use monitoring , reporting server , admin console need on same machine. ok, installed server on hyper-v host partition discover console cannot installed in windows server 2008 because requires powershell, supported on windows xp, vista, , server 2003.... installed on windows xp laptop , link hyper-v via vpn. problem firewall set default on windows server 2008 hyper-v blocks port 8100. console error says check firewall, have no idea on how set allow port 8100 tcp (it has ton of tcp related rules in there default). there step-by-step instructions on how change firewall allow port (turning firewall of entirely work, don't want leave way).
when hyper-v server added scvmm 2008 server proper firewall settings changed.
powershell available on server 2008 "feature" - can install in features section of server manager.
therefore, install scvmm server (requires server 2008 x64), install scvmm administration console, connect scvmm server (the user account installed granted access default), add hyper-v host.
this works best when domain joined, can work when target host not domain joined.
your scvmm server must domain joined.
the installation routine take care of firewall rules. also, make sure none of hosts on "public" network prevent management protocols getting out regardless of firewall rules.
is scvmm required manage hyper-v? - no.
is better solution when have many hyper-v hosts? - yes.
