Event 12002: "The Reporting Web Service is not working." everything else fine, after installing Dell DSET.
in troubleshooting unrelated problem (intermittent lsi_sas event 11 errors), on our sbs 2k8 pro dell pe t310 server, dell support guy had me install program called dset dell collects , returns info server them evaluate. installed dell download manager download , install firmware update device causing problems. far, appears original problem has been corrected. however, ever since server restart after installing programs, i've been getting
wsus event 12002 "the reporting web service not working." , clients showing out of date in sbs console.
in client %windir%\windowsupdate.log files, i'm seeing

and again, started after dell software installed.
strangely, the the wsus client access tools from

on server, wsus console connects server , shows 1 update installed. 1 update shows needing installed on 1 of pc's , has been seen of them , installed 2 (offices locked). clients /are/ seeing updates, can't report have installed them.
in client logs, see things like:

followed reporting web
so far have
- uninstalled dell software (except firmware update, of course)
- re-run configuration wizard wsus console.
- tried run "server cleanup wizard" locked (times 3 hours) while deleting old updates.
- spent hours searching net other people have problem , checking suggestions. of can find appears relate prior versions of iis or os. e.g. 2k3 or versions of iis have different user interface.
i've checked:
- the permissions on folders referenced web services. far can tell permissions set correctly.
- there no .net 1.1 or 2.0 installed on server (and never remember).
- again, clientwebservices seem working fine, it's reporting service failing.
thanks info. know.
turns out although "windows update" service running, "update service" service wasn't running. doh. no idea why... set autostart after delay. , there weren't error message indicating problem, see. started when started , stayed running. seems working now. after next restart, i'll check , see if has problem again.
dell support says operating system problems microsoft solve.
