How to modify a certificate template

i'd modify properties in user certificate template, they're greyed out.  i've been trying 2 weeks , have not managed past despite searching web, modifying security settings, etc.  suspect i've missed out authorisation step, i'm still new server 2008 (i prefer unix!) , have not been able identify it.  i'd appreciate helping me newbie problem.

the server in question development system.  have set enterprise subordinate ca.  have obtained , installed , installed server certificate superior ca (which remote in organisation, ie not in same domain or anything).  service starts, , have used web interface request user certificate.

this request fails, reasonably enough, because server certificate valid year, , user certificate template has validity period of 1 year.  since server certificate issued weeks ago, mean user certificate outlive issuing server certificate.

i know 10-year server certificate, development system, chose instead learn how modify template validity period, exercise.  , that's i'm stuck.  specifically, (though there many other routes same dead end):

1.  start server manager.
2.  expand roles.
3.  expand active directory certificate services.
4.  click certificate templates.
5.  right-click user.
6.  click properties.

this displays template.  validity period box, example, set @ 1 year , greyed out.

any appreciated.
