Hyper-V Integration Tools Upgrade Issue

i have hyper-v server with guest os server 2008 r2, running on server 2012 r2 failover cluster. particular guest converted vmware virtual server. integration services working (presumably version built in server 2008 r2), when try upgrade latest version, error after "installing guest components" phase starts:

"an error has occurred: 1 of update processes returned error code 87".

in addition, vmguestsetup.log file shows:

#### end: install integration services - error code = 0x20000006

detected worker thread exit

worker thread error code = 20000006

exit code = 0x57

i converted other vmware servers hyper-v , able upgrade integration tools on without issue, difference being removed vmware tools before conversion servers on able upgrade integration tools, removed vmware tools after conversion server causing issues?

historically, vmware tools uninstalled while vm running on vmware platform.

after vm removed vmware platform vmware tools not uninstall.

it had tools not running.

(mind you, experience in 2011 when did lot of work, highly doubt things have changed much).

the recommended process still remove platform specific tools prior conversion.

(i had written script in bash strip vmware tools registry which became an iso "project kensho")
