Desktop Virtualization planning help
hello,
we're company around 1900 pcs , wish implement desktop virtualization in near future. we're practically full microsoft company, of our servers running windows server 2012 , virtualized. after reading lot documentation everywhere, wish start plan in order run small pilot first. hope can give guidance general concerns have @ moment:
- is technically possible implement "pure-microsoft" desktop virtualization solution? (we have ea , sa). or, have include -at point- services of third-party providers citrix in order deploy successful project? (in other words: why need them?).
- the vast majority of our users task-workers need office, browser, couple of non-microsoft applications , interaction printers, scanners, etc.. so.. what's better in terms of scalability (costs) , manageability: pooled virtual desktops or session-based desktops?
- is there kind of tool or calculator available, lets input data number of pcs, type of users, etc. something estimate kind or hardware, servers or storage need?
- where can clear information licensing in desktop virtualization? we've read lot confusing licensing conditions, new cdl, devices byod, etc. there updated resource can whole panorama cleared?
thank in advance!

yes, possible implement microsoft-only solution. however, number of potential desktops talking about, citrix brings management components play make lot easier. that's why microsoft partners them.
have considered remote desktop servers (the old terminal services) task workers , giving them thin clients? may less costly solution. session-based desktops people need able modify contents of desktop or need administrative control. task workers better served pooled. again, citrix has nice additions in space.
sizing 'it depends' answer. i'm not positive, since citrix leader in space, might have something.
