Remove space if a merge field is blank

doing letter mail merge employees. not employees have middle initial additional blank space created in final merge. want space close there 1 space between first , last name. used if else option that's not correct - prompts additional text, not allow deleting space...unless there's special syntax , don't know is. help! (using microsoft word 2010, data excel 2010)
