Word 2010 List Styles

first, msdn blog, cybertext ("taming multilevel lists"), shauna kelly ("how create numbered headings...."), , several others for improving understanding of multi-level lists.  great explanations (sourced below).  here's unresolved list issue, and in search solution, see it's shared others:

my goal create , distribute a two-level list, for multiple-choice test question template, with space between questions no space within each question (where answer choices go.  i've defined new list style, , linked it existing paragraph styles (list number , list number 2).  except numbering scheme, closely followed procedure in cybertext article, "taming multilevel lists."

all works expected except 1 thing.  after working in list, hit enter twice (to out normal style).  first stroke puts document at the top number level , style, second stroke doesn't take normal style; it remain in list number style.

this different behavior in built-in list in list library (the 1 goes 1), a), i), etc.  in one, backing out of list hitting enter returns document to normal style.  haven't been able find what's different between built-in list , customized one.  apparently can't modify built-in list in library, , can't make new list behave built-in 1 (getting normal style).  i'm stumped.  points me in right direction appreciated.

thank you, , again experts generous contributions got me far.
